Who We Are

Leigh Tuck

TV & Film Production Ecologist | Co-founder of Spectrum Ecology | Environmental & Planning Consultant | GIS & Landscape Mapping | Sustainable Transport

With expertise in environmental policy, ecological consultancy, and the UK planning system, I specialise in bridging the gap between development, conservation, and legislation. I thrive on problem-solving, particularly in complex cases where ecological requirements intersect with planning law, protected landscapes, and large-scale development projects.

As co-founder of Spectrum Ecology, I have worked extensively on protected species mitigation, habitat mapping, and ecological assessments across the UK. My expertise includes securing Site of Special Scientific Interest consents for filming in protected landscapes, providing innovative solutions that allow productions to meet environmental compliance without compromising creative vision. Over the past eight years, I’ve been a key figure in enabling sustainable, responsible filming in ecologically sensitive locations.

I have a deep knowledge of the Town and Country Planning Act and its interaction with environmental law, ensuring that developments and conservation efforts align with both UK and European environmental regulations. My work spans landscape-wide conservation strategies, helping to identify habitat linkages and missing connections that support the creation of nature networks.

Beyond consultancy, I have over 15 years’ experience in sustainable transport and countryside access, promoting walking and cycling as essential tools for both public health and environmental conservation. My background in public rights of way management has given me a unique perspective on how land use, ecology, and public access can be balanced effectively.

While I am passionate about coastal and woodland environments, my expertise lies in understanding how landscapes function and interconnect—a knowledge base that underpins my work in GIS, landscape mapping, and habitat assessment. Whether it’s designing practical mitigation strategies or engaging the public with amazing bat facts (like how a single bat eats 3,000 midges a night!), I am driven by a belief that conservation should be both practical and inspiring.

I also have a passion for travel and exploring diverse habitats, believing that experiencing different landscapes and cultures is key to understanding our own natural environment.

With a deep-rooted passion for ecology, conservation, and environmental policy, I have spent over 15 years working across the public, private, and creative sectors to promote biodiversity, sustainable land management, and ecological best practices.

I help shape strategies that balance economic development with ecological responsibility, ensuring a sustainable future for Wales’ natural landscapes.

As a freelance ecologist and co-founder of Spectrum Ecology, I have provided ecological services across Wales, working with developers, local authorities, and film productions to ensure environmental compliance in protected landscapes and ecologically sensitive locations. My work in the film & TV industry has involved advising on-site ecological considerations and providing specialist mitigation strategies for high-profile productions.

Beyond consultancy, I am passionate about reconnecting people with the magic of the natural world. I have designed and delivered creative landscape interpretation schemes across South and Mid Wales, ensuring that conservation is not just about protection, but also education and engagement.
